Public Statement on Art Therapy Licensure Compliance
New Jersey Art Therapy Association (NJATA)

The New Jersey Art Therapy Association (NJATA) is dedicated to advancing the field of art therapy and ensuring that the highest standards of professional practice are upheld throughout the state. As part of our mission, we want to address a critical issue regarding the legal requirements for practicing art therapy in New Jersey.

Ensuring Compliance with Art Therapy Licensure Requirements

It has come to our attention that there are individuals and organizations in New Jersey advertising and providing services under the title "art therapy" without meeting the necessary licensure requirements. This practice not only undermines the integrity of the art therapy profession but also poses potential risks to clients who may receive services from unqualified practitioners.

According to New Jersey state law, specifically P.L. 2015, c.199 (N.J.S.A. 45:8B-51 et seq.), the Art Therapist Licensing Act, individuals must be licensed to practice and represent their services as art therapy legally. To qualify for licensure, practitioners must:
-
Hold a master's or doctoral degree in art therapy, or a related field with post-graduate certification in art therapy from an accredited program.
-
Complete 4,500 hours of supervised work experience in the practice of art therapy under a qualified supervisor.
-
Pass the Art Therapy Credentials Board Examination (ATCBE) or an equivalent examination approved by the Art Therapists Advisory Committee.

Art therapy is a specialized psychotherapy practice integrating psychological principles with creative processes to promote mental health and well-being. Proper training and licensure are essential to ensure that practitioners are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to address the complex needs of their clients effectively.

Our Call to Action

We strongly urge all individuals and organizations offering art therapy services to verify that they comply with state licensure requirements. Doing so not only aligns with legal standards but also ensures the safety and efficacy of the therapeutic services provided to the public.
